A housing stock
built mostly before 1981
According to Statistics Canada's 2021 Census, 55% of homes in Longueuil were built before 1981: 16% in 1960 or earlier, 39% between 1961 and 1980. Those installations were designed before EV chargers, hot tubs and radiant floors.
Also according to Statistics Canada's 2021 Census, single-detached houses make up 31.9% of homes in Longueuil, and 52.3% of households own their home.
We have done about twenty projects in Longueuil. What we are asked for most there: fixing heating problems and bringing the wiring of older houses up to date.
A service may have been redone since the house was built. We confirm it when we open the panel, before telling you what it can still carry.

The year a house was built is a clue, not an answer.
An empty slot is not spare capacity
A panel full of breakers may be feeding almost nothing, and a 100 amp panel with open slots may already be at full load. The real question: do you have amps to spare?
Three jobs that are
decided at the panel
A charger, a panel to replace, heating to add: all three are decided at the panel, before you buy anything. We assess the existing loads and what you want to add according to the applicable Code. That tells us whether your service is enough or whether another solution is needed.
A charger is not always counted the same way. When charging is controlled by an energy management system, the Code provides for a different treatment, and that device can sometimes add the charger without upgrading the service. We tell you on site whether that applies to you.

EV charger
A 200 amp service does not, on its own, confirm there is room for a charger. What decides: what the house already draws, the charging power you want and the load management that is possible. It is best to wait for that check before ordering the charger.

Panel and service upgrade
When the service can no longer handle what you want to add, it goes first. A Commander panel, a discontinued brand, is one Marc-André always recommends replacing.

Electric heating or radiant floors
Baseboards, convectors, a garage unit heater or cable under the tile. Heating weighs heavily in the load calculation, and a radiant floor is decided before the flooring goes down.

The grants that
apply in Longueuil
We found no municipal program for a home EV charger or for electrical work. The grants that apply are provincial: Écorecharge for the charger, LogisVert for solar self generation. The program administrator decides on your eligibility, never your electrician.
The dates that count depend on the program. For Écorecharge, the date on the purchase or lease invoice tells whether the charger has to be connected. For LogisVert solar, the installation date of the panels determines the grant.
A few conditions to check
- Écorecharge at home: a building with one or two dwellings, and an electric vehicle already acquired and registered in Québec
- Écorecharge: new level 2 charger, on the eligible list, bought from a Canadian retailer, and connected if its invoice is dated April 1, 2026 or later
- Écorecharge: the grant covers the charger, installation costs are not eligible
- LogisVert solar: certified panels, final connection authorization from Hydro-Québec, and an application within 9 months of the installation, according to Hydro-Québec
Full conditions, checked on October 12, 2026: Écorecharge, choosing a charger (Québec.ca), Écorecharge normative framework (PDF, in French), LogisVert residential (Hydro-Québec).

Permits and
connection in Longueuil
On the City’s side
Longueuil's by-law on permits and certificates (CO-2024-1285) requires a permit to renovate or repair a building, and it excludes electrical work from the minor repairs that are exempt. That is the opposite of Brossard. The application is signed by the owner, or by their representative with a written power of attorney.
In the heritage site of Vieux-Longueuil, only electrical installations on the main façade go through the local heritage council, according to the City's fact sheet. We check with you what applies to your project before the work.

What changes the
price in Longueuil
The price depends on your installation and on the factors below. Our online estimator gives “starting at” prices for each type of work, and the final figure is confirmed after the visit.
See starting prices in the estimatorThe age and type of house
An original installation and one that has already been redone do not call for the same work. We see it when we open the panel.
The distance to the equipment
From the panel to the charger, the hot tub or the garage, the route determines the length of the wiring. The gauge also depends on the equipment to be powered and on the circuit requirements.
What has to be opened or crossed
A finished basement, a paved driveway or a deck are not crossed the same way. We look at the possible routes before drilling.
The distance from our base
We come from Verdun, on the other side of the river. What makes the price vary is mostly the work to be done at your place, described above.

Frequently asked questions
Nothing here promises a timeline or an amount: for that, we need to see the job.
The City's by-law on permits and certificates requires a permit to renovate or repair a building, and it states that electrical work is not among the minor repairs that are exempt. The permit application is signed by the owner, or by their representative with a written power of attorney. We check your project's case before starting. When the service is modified, the connection request to Hydro-Québec is on us.
A 200 amp service is not enough, on its own, to confirm the available capacity. We check the existing loads, the charging you want and the energy management options before recommending the work. If you have already picked a charger, keep its spec sheet: its power is part of the assessment.
It depends on the work to be done and on the constraints of your installation: we assess it with you before starting. When the service is modified too, turning the power back on goes through Hydro-Québec, and we do not promise their date for them.
For a Commander panel, yes: it is a discontinued brand, and Marc-André always recommends replacing it. For another discontinued brand, we check the model, the condition of the panel and the capacity you need before recommending anything.
The amperage written on the main breaker, the panel brand on the label inside the door, what you want to add, the big appliances already in place, and how the Hydro-Québec wires reach the house: through a mast or underground. With those answers, the call gets straight to the point. The decision itself is made on site.
The work is guaranteed for one year, parts and labour. If you supply the equipment yourself, the warranty covers the labour.
We do not promise a timeline from a distance: it depends on the job and on the current schedule. Text us and we will get back to you with a realistic date.

Our articles to
see things clearly

How many amps for an EV charger
A level 2 charger runs on a dedicated circuit, most often a 40 amp one. But the number that decides your project is not that one: it is what is left available in your electrical service.

100 amp vs 200 amp service
The rating of your service is stamped on the main breaker, at the top of the panel. What decides an upgrade is neither its age nor its looks: it is what you want to add to it, and the load calculation that measures it.
